Slider windows are a type of horizontally set window, where the active sash will slide left or right (depending on the configuration – XO or OX) in order to open the window.

Single slider windows, as you might expect, feature a single slidable sash, whereas the other ‘inactive’ sash will be fixed in position. These windows feature two panes of glass divided by the central, vertically situated sash, called the meeting rail.

The meeting rail is where the locks are located and keep the active sash from being opened from the exterior when the locks are engaged. The meeting rail can also be reinforced with steel for added structural integrity and security

These windows are best suited for use in window openings that are wider than they are tall, and they make a great window option for homeowners seeking a greater level of visibility of the outdoors. This makes them popular for installation near exterior garden areas, in kitchens and dining rooms, and to add natural light in bedrooms.

The Benefits of Single Slider Windows

Single slider windows offer a wide range of advantages that make them an attractive choice for window installation and replacement. The largest benefits include:
  • Superior visibility – Single slider windows offer an unobstructed view unmatched by most window types aside from fixed and picture windows. This viewing area can be enhanced by choosing a contemporary-style sliding window with a slimmer frame.
  • Good ventilation – Single sliders are more dependable, energy-efficient, secure, have fewer service issues, and get just as much ventilation as double slider windows (because it is not possible to open more than one side of double slider windows at one time).
  • Great source of natural light – Without an excess of sashes or muntins in the way, slider windows are great for letting light into the home.

Bedroom Windows and Escape Openings

Every bedroom needs at least one window big enough to climb out of in an emergency. Phoenix’s 2024 residential code (Section R319) sets the size of that escape opening:
  • At least 5.7 square feet of clear opening (5 square feet on the ground floor)
  • At least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide when open
  • The bottom of the opening no more than 44 inches above the floor
A single slider opens only about half its width, because one pane stays fixed. In a small bedroom opening, that half may not reach 5.7 square feet.

Phoenix’s code also covers replacements. When a bedroom window is replaced at the same size, the new one must be the style with the largest opening. If any style can meet the full escape size, that style is the one that goes in.

That’s why we check every bedroom window when we measure, before we order. If a slider falls short, a casement window or single-hung window of the same size may give you more opening, and we’ll walk you through the choices.
