Casement Windows
Casement windows crank open like a door, so the whole sash catches the breeze. Closed, the sash presses tight against the frame, which helps keep dust out. Learn how they work below.

Casement windows are windows that open like a door on hinges. Most casement windows open outward. Some people call them crank windows because the way to open them is by turning the crank handle.
Casement windows differ from other configurations in that each casement window frame can only have one piece of glass in it. When you see a casement window with two pieces of glass, there are two separate window frames mulled together to make that window. This usually makes them much more expensive than single slider windows.

Our casement windows are more tightly sealed and more energy-efficient than any single-hung or sliding window because they close more like a refrigerator than a sliding door. They are also better for venting fully and opening up views; they look more like fixed picture windows.

Benefits of Casement Windows
Design Options
- You can choose the traditional crank-operated casement windows or go with push-out windows.
- Some property owners select French casement windows since they have two panes that open from the center (similar to the function of French doors). One benefit from a French casement window installation is they lock into each other and do not have a bar in the middle; which means nothing obstructs your view when looking out of the window.
- Our Casement Windows are available in both Dual Pane and Triple Pane
- Most casement windows open outwards from your home, but we can offer a casement window replacement that opens in-wards if needed. Feel free to ask us about our European tilt and turn windows for more information.
- They can be made as picture windows. Casement pictures are non-operable casement windows. Some homeowners may opt for this as a means to match the styles of their windows.
Bedroom Windows and Escape Openings
Every bedroom needs at least one window big enough to climb out of in an emergency. Phoenix’s 2024 residential code (Section R319) sets the size of that escape opening:
Phoenix’s code also covers replacements. When a bedroom window is replaced at the same size, the new one must be the style with the largest opening. If any style can meet the full escape size, that style is the one that goes in, and that is often a casement.
The code allows window opening control devices (ASTM F2090) that stop the sash partway, as long as the window still opens to full escape size once released. We check all of this when we measure.
- At least 5.7 square feet of clear opening (5 square feet on the ground floor)
- At least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide when open
- The bottom of the opening no more than 44 inches above the floor
